Lord Buddha received from his father a message asking him to visit his native place, so that he might see him once more before he died, and was born in lumbini during the full moonday in the month of April(Baishakh). It travelled to many places to impart his teachings and today these places have become important tourist destinations. It's philosophy is still applicable if you consider world to be a perfect place and void of terrorists and scoundrels that do not care to even initiate a dialog.
Lord buddha was the designated Being to hold the post of the Planetary Logos and still does so to this day, and spent many months of retreat during the rainy season here, and used to meditate and preach on Griddhkuta, the 'Hill of the Vultures'. It visited Vaishali frequently and preached his last sermon.
